Energizers and Icebreakers!

For anybody who has ever run a workshop, taught a classroom lesson, held a meeting, made a presentation, or tried to build a team, he or she would have most likely experienced the power and advantages of employing some form of icebreakers or energizers.

There is little doubt that the use of icebreakers and energizers can break down mental barriers, ease participants, build rapport, jump start lazy brains, and promote cohesiveness.

But are all icebreakers the same? Do they all give you the same results? Are they actually created equal?

In my years of training and giving presentations and interacting with hundreds and hundreds of workshop and seminar participants, I have observed that some icebreakers and training games work better than others.

Visual icebreakers that feature colors and puzzling elements seem to stand out from the crowd. And rightly so, because they harness the combined juxtaposing power of visuals and the drawing power of riddles to engage the mind. Power these visually stimulating brainteasers up on the ubiquitous PC with a presentation slide show software and viola, you have a winner!

So why do these visual icebreakers work so well?

The secret lies in your audience themselves. Most learners are visual. That is they learn best visually. Research studies have shown that a whopping 83% of our learning experience is through our eyes. By contrast, learning by hearing, touching and smelling accounts for only a mere 17%.

This means that as a trainer, facilitator, teacher, educator, instructor, or seminar leader, if you are still not employing visuals aids in your workshops and presentations, you are not maximizing the impact of your training sessions. What's worse is that you are literally - and visually - losing a big part of the cohort of attendees who prefer to assimilate information visually!

Coupled with skilled facilitation, visual brainteasers and icebreakers have the power to engage the mind, stir up emotions, evoke responses, and captivate attention so that we can more effectively achieve our training objectives.
